Losing weight is one of the most difficult hurdles that plus-size and obese people struggle with in this age laden with ‘fast foods’ and processed foods. Being overweight and obesity are recognised as major health problems in most countries. So many formulas have been touted as the best to help people lose weight fast.
However, there is no magic in weight loss. The process has to be slow, hard and time consuming. Like all other things in life, without discipline, hard work and commitment, we will never realise our dreams.
Obese people have an increased disposition to conditions such as coronary heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, degenerative joint disease, social and psychological problems. Health programmes in communities that aim to enable people to achieve and maintain weight loss are essential for health gain.

The journey
A weight management program could be a long-term process and requires constant self-monitoring. Any person who sets out for the weight management journey should therefore be disciplined in workouts schedule and diet management. The two must be done together as diet management contributes 80 per cent to weight loss. Individuals are likely to concede in the early stage and eventually fail the weight management program. However, social networks play a significant role in this journey.
An obese person who participates in a weight management program may want to know what other participants in the program are doing to achieve maximum results, thus promoting each other for better achievement. Weight loss apps respond to such requests and typically require users to monitor their food intake and physical activities to calculate calorie consumption.
The criteria that qualify a companion for weight loss should include familiarity to the target person in some ways, positive influence on the weight loss process and the ability to resist the unhealthy cultural norm, if any.

Weight loss with friends

The concept of “weight loss with friends” is widely accepted in social community, such as self-organised weight-loss activities in the office and social community. A good example is the office where my sister works. A year ago, a group of young ladies who had just come out of maternity leave were debating on several ways through which they could get back their youthful body. Among the many suggestions that were fronted, visiting the gym at least three times a week featured prominently.
A strategic plan was crafted, where a suitable gym near the office was identified. However, one hurdle still stood between the plan and the actualisation. The rates per month were very expensive. One of the ladies was asked to raise the issue with the human resource office on the possibility of subsidising the rate for staff to an affordable amount.
While it took a few months to be implemented, the plan has helped several men and women who wish to cut weight as well as those in need of fitness.
But the social networking on weight management in the office did not end there. The young ladies have identifies other programmes which they undertake as a group and the results have been amazing.
“We have done a two-week wheat challenge which requires one to keep off all wheat products for two weeks. We are yet to embark on a 10-day detox programme which not only aids in weight loss but also helps flush out toxic agents from the body while ushering in someone to clean eating,” says Caro Njoki.
Body weight management through social networking is more effective than conventional means because it is highly conducive to connect people based on shared interests and goals, which could be free of geographical limitations.
